Synopsis: Of Classic Porn Movie Amanda By Night

"Amanda By Night" is as fresh and stimulating today as it was when it initially came out in 1982. Believe me, it's worth every one of the six (6) Adult Film Critics Awards it garnered. Veronica Hart is hot and the supporting cast sizzles from scene to scene. Meanwhile, the plot - about the murder and investigation of a prostitute - is engaging and the action is a dick stroker's wet dream. Ladies, in particular, will get into it's old school style of sex (although some of the aggressive stuff may be a turn off). It manages to be sensuous and extremely lascivious at the same time. The flick reaches a real high point when it continuously segues from S & M between two hookers and their client, and another pro having sex with a young male virgin. I hesitate to think how many new nookie flicks can't hit the standards that this one does.

"Amanda By Night," in my opinion, is a timeless titty flick. The girls are all au natural and nice to look at. And the sex is top rate. As this movie ably proves, nighttime is definitely the right time for making whoopee.

Commentary: Of Classic Porn Movie Amanda By Night:

What a difference a few days makes! Last Wednesday, after watching the retro raunch (or lack thereof) in "Virginia" - a decades old adult film, which most definitely showed its age - I had all but given up on the classic coitus genre. But this flick - "Amanda By Night" - has me salivating to see more of The Big 80s. Hell, I'm so excited by this DVD, I might even dig deeper into the past and start taking a peek at some 70s pornos too. As you'd expect, "Amanda's" film quality isn't the greatest. However, the sex and the plot (Yes, I was giddy over the plot!) are top rate. Call me a crazed, old dirty bastard, but I just loved some of the aggressive, kinky stuff in this one. It intermingles with the sultry, sensuous sex quite nicely. I also loved the retro pop reunion music. If I closed my eyes, I would have thought I was watching that 70s cop show class S*W*A*T. Of course, I'm glad my eyes were wide open for this one. Coincidentally, the plot does involve a police investigation of hooker's murder. But more on that later. Right now, let's talk about the start of this movie, which features rogue vice cop Rosario (a surprisingly svelte Ron Jeremy) having sex with one of the prostitutes, a lusty looking blonde named Gwen. Apparently, Rosario is paid a stipend and allowed to fuck the call girls so that he will not turn them in.

Before the two screw, the moves fades in on big time pro Amanda (Veronica Hart), who is in charge of many of the hookers. She's asked over the phone by her ex-pimp Friday to do one last job for him, but she declines, saying she'll get two other girls - Bev and her smack addicted brunette bud Gwen - to fill in (In a light moment, Amanda kids to Friday that one of the gals is "87 and blind and the other is a midget with a limp."). The scene then cuts back to Rosario and Bev doing the nasty. Rosario take his nightstick from his pants and stuffs in in Bev. He does her missionary and doggy. There are a few shadows during the sex, but it's still a fine to watch. Rosario pumps Bev from behind and pulls on her hair as if he's riding a horse. Then, he tit fucks her and shoots a healthy load of spew in her mouth and on her face. After Rosario leaves, Bev runs into Gwen who's shooting smack into her arm. It's stereotypical but helps to enhance later aspects of the plot.

Afterwards, the girls meet up with Amanda, who begrudgingly supplies Gwen with her drugs. Soon, the guy Friday sets them up with arrives in a car and drives Gwen and Bev back to his swinging pad. The dude's into S & M, so the hookers have him dress up like the gimp from "Pulp Fiction" and treat him real bad. Of course, he loves every bit of it. The slave - who we later find out is a wealthy, influential man - gets his dick sucked and whipped (OUCH!). While the bondage babes are getting busy with their client, the movie shifts back and forth between them and Amanda, who's popping the cherry of a nookie neophyte. The contrasting sex styles run the full gamut of the viewer's emotion. Very nice! The S & M, however, soon gets quite harsh as the guy is dragged around on a leash like a dog and warned not to cum before being told lest "the clips are put back on." They never show the clips, but I'm guessing they'd be put on his balls and nipples. Double OUCH! Soon, though, it's the slave who proves his dominance by having his way with the mistresses. He fucks Bev supine hard and fast. Meanwhile, back at Amanda's, the young dude is trying to be passionate but is doing it sloppy. We've all been there before!

After the S & M is over, Bev leaves and Gwen goes swimming while the client has a drink at his outdoor pool bar. Bev belittles the guy's sexual prowess, so he jumps in the pool and accidentally kills her in a fit of rage. The next day, Detective Ambrose Harte is assigned to investigate the murder, but no one is talking. Either they're keeping shut for their own good (Friday), or they simply do not know who the man was (Amanda and Bev). Vice cop Rosario, for his part, could care less about the crime. He just wants his weekly payoff. Plus, he and his partner want to fuck Luanne, a new blonde hooker. Of course, the cops get what they want during a classic double team. Luanne, who initially gets into the sex before being repulsed by Rosario, blows both guys' bones. Rosario then fucks her hairy clit while his partner fucks her mouth. They do it supine and doggy. Ambrose then shows up just in time to see Jeremy finishing up on a resistant Luanne. Ambrose is disgusted by what Rosario is doing to the obviously unwilling hooker. As a result, he pulls out a pistol and tells Rosario rather bluntly that if he catches him taking liberties again he will stick the gun up his ass.

Afterwards, Ambrose learns from Luanne that Bev's boss is Amanda, so he goes and pays her a visit. Although distraught over Bev's death, Amanda tells him nothing. Amanda subsequently visits Friday to discuss the situation. To relive some stress, the two screw doggy (Don't you love how the plot just sets up the sex!?). There are some real good close up camera angles in this vignette. The underneath and rear view are exceptional. Amanda also rides reverse cowgirl and gets a mouthful of money shot while Friday is sitting on her face and reaching back to finger her clip. A very cool maneuver.

Amanda decides she wants out of the biz, opting to go straight with an agreeable Friday. First, though, Amanda says they need to turn in the killer. That's easier said than done, however, since Friday is in cahoots with him. This isn't known until the next scene in which Friday visits Gwen, who is strung out and lying in a bath tub. The drugged out hooker sucks his cock and then fucks him. Interestingly, the sex takes place with passionate music playing in the background. Nothing, however, is passionate about what happens next. With Gwen in an apparent comfort zone, Friday kills her to prevent her from talking and makes her death look like an OD. Now, all he has to do is kill Amanda and he and Bev's murderer are off scott free. Friday schemes with the killer - whose name I believe is Blake. It's agreed that if Blake gets future zoning approval for Friday to build a night club Friday will kill Amanda in return. The plot, as they say, thickens.

Everything almost comes to a head at a big party, which turns into a big orgy for several of the guests. Two chicks get dicked in a bedroom by one guy, while another three-way takes place right on the living room floor as people watch and cheer.

Friday ultimately confronts Amanda in the bathroom, but doesn't have enough time to off her before she runs away. He catches up to her outside, but Ambrose shows up and saves the day. Ambrose tells Amanda that Gwen was found dead of an apparent overdose, which he personally believes is a bogus assumption. Hart gets a little melodramatic and over the top here in the only real overacting in the entire movie. But I'm assuming this scene helped win her the "Best Actress" Adult Film Critics Award so I guess it serves its purpose - at least for her. It also serves the plot well as she finally breaks down and give Friday's name to Ambrose. Unfortunately, when Ambrose gets to Friday's apartment, he's dead.

The rest of the story mostly ties up loose ends as Ambrose continues to track down the killer. However, there is a decent masturbation scene in which Amanda does dildo sex proud. Ambrose and Amanda also get together for sex on a sailboat as the movie draws to close. If you think XXX-rated movies from 20 and 30 years ago are too dated to get your dick hard, this forgotten fuck flick will prove you wrong in every way imaginable. I must admit I was of the mindset that pre-80s adult films were nothing but stale stuff. "Amanda By Night," though, is anything but by the numbers porn. I highly recommend it. I guess old school smut doesn't suck after all.

Video quality is average, which is what you'd expect from a flick shot on film in the early 80s. The sound, however, holds up fine. The extras - including the Cumming Soon section - are mostly text and mere filler.

“Amanda By Night happens to be my favorite adult film of all time, especially but not exclusively because I'm a huge Veronica Hart fan. This great lady should seriously consider penning her autobiography someday. Considering she has experienced the adult film industry from every angle (actress/director/producer) it would make one hell of a read. Back in her performing days (okay, she still appears in front of the cameras quite regularly but in a non-sex capacity) she was porn's finest thespian bar none and this film is her high watermark. She's Amanda Heather, highpriced callgirl, who finds herself in trouble following the death of colleague Beverley (the late, legendary Lisa DeLeeuw) at the hands of a client she inadvertently enraged. Since Amanda's the one who set up the 'date' in the first place, she may be next on the culprit's hit list. Weary cop Ambrose Hart (perfectly portrayed by the wonderful Robert Bolla, 'Tracy' to Veronica's 'Hepburn') gets the unwanted assignment of protecting the prostitute. Once they get past their initial animosity, the two find themselves increasingly attracted towards one another. This film works on so many levels and is a terrific example of how good adult films often were during the Golden Age (roughly spanning the years 1975-1984). Sex scenes are tremendous, showcasing both animal passion and romantic tenderness with equal aplomb, but it's also a cracking thriller (considerably better than anything you'll see on late night cable, trust me) and a compelling character study. One shouldn't be too surprised really, as this gem was directed by the multi-talented if vastly underrated 'Robert McCallum' aka Gary Graver, one of the greatest storytellers the porn industry has ever seen.”

“I must admit I hadn't actually heard of this film when I picked it up at the video store. But, being a huge fan of Veronica Hart, I thought it was a safe bet...I was absolutely right. "Amanda By Night" is everything most adult films aren't. It's genuinely engrossing, reasonably well written and produced, and top notch performances all around. Especially of note are Ms. Hart, Lisa DeLeeuw, Samantha Fox and the ever-hard R. Bolla. The domination scene (with a body double for Mr, Holloway) was so funny it made the whole film. Till the day I die I'll hear Lisa DeLeeuw's voice in my ear "F*ck her, YOU WORM!!!" A classic, don't miss it. But don't bother with the DVD, the VHS actually looks and sounds better.”
